Customs bond procurement

Sized to the duty. Named to the same IOR.

We calculate the bond from projected duties, taxes, and fees — not last year’s number copied forward. Continuous bonds for brands that file as a practice. Single-entry bonds for the one-off. The 5106, the commercial invoice, and the bond name the same importer of record.

No silent IOR. The bond rides the same file as the 7501.

The bond that fails

Last year’s number is not a calculation.

A continuous bond copied forward from a quieter catalog is how insufficient coverage starts. A single-entry bond on the wrong legal name is how a silent IOR starts. The 5106, the commercial invoice, and the bond have to agree.

We size the bond from projected duties, taxes, and fees on the file in front of us. If the IOR identity is unclear, we pause. We do not invent a principal to look fast.

Duty math first. Then the surety.

01 · The method

Math. Type. Name. Same file.

Math

Duty, tax, and fees.

The bond is sized from projected liability — not a round number remembered from last season. Mixed HTS crates need the mixed picture.

Type

Continuous or single-entry.

Continuous for DTC brands that file as a practice. Single-entry for the one-off hardware run or the crowdfunded prototype.

Name

5106 = invoice = bond.

The legally responsible importer of record is the same on every document. No silent IOR. No borrowed name.

File

Same desk as the 7501.

The bond rides the licensed file. We do not procure coverage in a vacuum and hope the entry matches later.

02 · The real cost

An insufficient bond is not a paperwork footnote.

IOR mismatch and under-bonded liability attach when the surety and the entry tell different stories. The expensive bond is the one that does not cover the duty you actually owe — or the one named to the wrong party.

We would rather pause on an unclear principal than file a bond we cannot defend against the 7501.

03 · On the file

The bond sits on the same file as the entry.

Bond procurement is desk work. Duty math first. Then continuous or single-entry. Then the name that matches the 5106 and the invoice. A licensed broker still owns the file.

04 · What we need

Send the facts. We will say what the bond needs.

  1. Projected duty picture Catalog or invoice that supports the liability estimate — not last year’s copy.
  2. IOR legal name The entity that will appear on the 5106, the invoice, and the bond.
  3. EIN / importer number On the file before we approach the surety.
  4. Continuous vs single How often you file. A one-off is not a continuous story.
  5. Ports of entry Where the freight actually clears — on the same operating picture.

Questions we actually get

The file before the appointment.

Continuous or single-entry?

Continuous for importers who file as a practice. Single-entry for the one-off lot. We size either from projected duties, taxes, and fees — not a copied number.

What is a silent IOR?

When the bond, the 5106, and the commercial invoice do not name the same legally responsible importer. We will not file that pattern.

Can you reuse last year’s bond amount?

Only if the duty picture still supports it. A louder catalog needs new math. We recalculate from the file in front of us.

Does the bond sit with the entry?

Yes. The bond rides the same licensed file as the 7501. We do not procure coverage in a vacuum.

The desk

Bring one duty picture and one legal name.

A consultation returns bond sizing notes and a flat fee. If the IOR identity is not one we can put on a surety application, we will say so in the memo.
